Review      : Essentials of Abnormal Psychology concentrates on the most common types of psychopathologies and examines the various subtypes within each DSM-IV-TR diagnostic category (the author presumes rudimentary understanding of the DSM- IV-TR classification system).
In addition, etiologies and potential treatment modalities are explored, including psychopharmacological modalities that were current at the time of publication. This book will not be as extensive or as exhaustive as a traditional abnormal psychology text, and it was not written as such. Therefore, this book does not concentrate on child and adolescent psychopathologies, and could not concentrate on all of the DSM-IV-TR categories.
The author found that in many abnormal psychology classes, all DSM-IV-TR categories were not covered, and those that are often eliminated have also been eliminated here. Please note that this is not due to their perceived lack of importance. This book can be used by upper- level undergraduate or graduate students as a stand- alone text, or as a supplement for those who have trouble understanding material in class or in their primary text. Professionals who wish to have a handy guide to review the most common psychopathologies and treatment methods will also fi nd this book very useful. Researchers and those who are preparing for certifi cation, licensure, or those who are preparing to take the GRE in psychology will also benefit from this book.
